Pros:

  • Dynamic effect process
  • Classic flanger sound
  • Small footprint
  • Sturdy build and construction

This flanger pedal is from Boss and is probably the most popular pedal of all time. The BF-3 is a classic and is known for its dynamic sound. Many users will tell you that it’s even better than the MXR flanger that came before it because of its solid construction and pedal functions.

The BF-3 sports a heavy duty cast metal casing that will fend off the tough world that you travel in. It features knobs for speed and intensity, and they both look like they’ll hold up really well. The flanger functions are very interactive and responsive and provide a rich, full-bodied sound that you’ll love if you’re into this kind of effect. The Boss BF-3 can also handle your other effects pedals since it sports a universal input and output. It’s also really easy to set-up. All in all, this is an exceptional flanger pedal for the price. If you’re looking for a good flanger pedal, the BF-3 is certainly worth considering.

  • 2 band EQ
  • pedalboard compatible
  • true bypass
  • LED light
  • 9VDC adapter included

  • The flanger can be used for a number of different applications – everything from country-style picking to classic rock

Cons:

  • There are no instructions or manual with this product
  • It can be difficult if you’ve never worked with a flanger pedal before

The JOYO JF-07 might not look like much of a flanger, but it does the job, with a huge array of classic flanger tone.

There are seven different flanger modes, and a number of different levels to play with. The pedal is very pedalboard-friendly, and you won’t need to worry about it being a space hog. Battery life is excellent, and the amp-style footswitch is absolutely perfect.

3. Source Audio SA240 Mercury Flanger Effect Pedal

Our rating: 8 / 10

Source Audio SA240 Mercury Flanger Effect Pedal

Pros:

  • Responds well to the expression pedal
  • Versatile, creating both subtle and dramatic effects
  • Optional Modulation speed & depth controls
  • The Flanger effect is different than the Chorus effect
  • Very affordable
  • Fairly robust

From the company that brought you the Genius pedal comes the Mercury, their latest foray into modulation effect pedals. The Mercury is a flanger pedal that comes in an attractive black enclosure. It features two knobs and three switches on its top, and has an expression pedal for variations in the intensity of the effect it creates.

The Mercury pedal is designed to subtly generate that “jet-like” flanging or a heavy-metal sound and everything in between, using its pedal and knob controls. However, the effects it creates with the controls on the pedal are different from the effects you get if you use the expression pedal.

The Mercury flanger can produce subtle rotary-like flanging sounds when you use its Depth and Rate controls in conjunction with its Rate control. When you use the expression pedal with the same settings, the flanger sounds play in a cyclical manner that can be used to produce more dramatic effects.

4. MXR EVH117 Flanger Guitar Effects Pedal

MXR EVH117 Flanger Guitar Effects Pedal

Pros:

  • EVH Flanger pedal
  • Solidly built
  • Versatile design
  • Uses MXR flanger technology
  • Slightly expensive

This flanger from MXR is designed with a control layout almost identical to the one used on the EVH flanger used by Eddie Van Halen himself. There are many things to love about this pedal, including its large sweeping rate, the amazing sound that it produces, and the fact that it’s versatile enough to be used on just about anything.

This pedal features an expression pedal that works with the flange effect to provide the most “swirly” sounds and sweeping back and forth that you have ever heard. There are also multiple modes which you can switch between depending on what sounds you want to get. Switching modes is quick and easy thanks to the easy-to-push buttons on the top of the pedal.

The EVH117 has a solid metal casing that keeps it from being too heavy while also protecting the internal circuitry. Inside, you’ll find ample circuitry designed to keep the sound it offers pristine as well as keep the unit itself from being too noisy. Some users have reported that the unit can be noisy when the effects are being used.

11. MXR M117R Flanger

Our rating: 5 / 10

MXR M117R Flanger

Check Price on Amazon

Pros:

  • Great value flanger pedal
  • Improved speed knob
  • Tails switch
  • Built with high-quality components

Cons:

  • Noisy at high gain levels
  • May be difficult to troubleshoot

The MXR M117R is a solidly built pedal that produces some really great tones. It’s one of the more versatile flangers out there because you can select the speed with the improved knob, and there is also a switch that gives you the option between having it start immediately or having the trails happening at the end of the pedal. This is particularly helpful when you want a flanger that’s indistinguishable from a chorus.

The MXR M117R doesn’t require a lot of gain to get the tone you want out of it, which makes it well-suited to being used in conjunction with other pedals in your collection. There is a little bit of noise added to the signal when the pedal is engaged, but if you want to get rid of that, you can set your clean tone slightly dirtier.

The pedal is quite easy to work on if you have to, and you should have plenty of options at your disposal so that you can dial in the tone you’re looking for.

Conclusion

As you’re considering your top ten flanger pedals for your own personal collection, keep in mind what’s most important to you. If you’re looking for something that sets the standards and gives you professional-quality sound and performance, there’s one name head and shoulders above all others – the Boss BF-2 Flanger. But if you’re just looking to play around with the pedal for fun, there are more cost-effective options available.
